10 Essential Tips for Safe Solo Travel

As much fun as traveling can be, a healthy dose of awareness and caution can go a long way toward ensuring your safety and well-being as a female solo traveler. Though I love a good adventure, exploring safely is always on my mind. Using common sense and remaining aware is always a good start. Your list may differ, but below are my 10 safe solo travel tips.

  1. Research where you'll be traveling to know if there are heightened local safety issues or travel advisories for travel abroad. Websites like Travel.State.gov provide valuable insights to stay informed.

  2. Stay at good and reputable hotels, even if it costs more. They don't have to be five-star hotels but do your research and stay in middle-of-the-range places.

  3. Ask the hotel folks what the safe areas in town are, especially if you'll be walking. Also, have a good idea of where you're going to avoid staring at your phone's GPS. You don't want to be an easy target.

  4. Tell someone where you'll be. If traveling solo in the US, I text a friend or two with my plans. If traveling abroad and text is available, I'll do the same and let the hotel's front desk staff know my basic itinerary.

  5. Pay attention to your instincts. Mine are well-developed, and listening to them has always paid off.

  6. Start the day early and end it before it's dark. I do this unless I'm with a group of trusted people who can accompany me back to my hotel.

  7. Secure the hotel door with a wedge or personal safety device. (I'm not sponsored by these)

  8. Minimize the bling. Don't wear jewelry or anything that will make you stand out.

  9. Travel with minimal cash. These days, you can pay with a credit card for just about everything!

  10. Blend in and do your best not to look like a tourist. Research and pay attention to local customs and respect and follow them, always remembering I am a guest in their state (US) or country I'm visiting.
